Our take

Most disc golf guides assume weather doesn’t matter. Ours does. A round on a 40-degree morning is a different game than the same course in July, and “playable” is our word for the difference: a month where daytime highs average at least 50°F, overnight lows stay at or above 28°F, and rain averages 10 days or fewer.

We built this page from NOAA’s 1991-2020 climate normals — thirty years of averaged monthly data from the airport weather station nearest each of our 15 cities. That’s deliberate. Normals describe what a month is usually like, not what next Saturday will be, so treat this as a planning tool, not a forecast. Wind isn’t scored yet; we’d rather leave a blank than pretend we measured it.

The heatmap below is the whole dataset. Your city’s row tells you when the season runs — and, just as usefully, when it doesn’t.

Fifteen cities, twelve months. Activate any cell (click, tap, or Enter) for the full month: normal high and low, rain days, and civil dusk.

Playable months by city. Rows are cities, columns are months. Each cell shows whether the month is playable, marginal, or off-season, and can be activated for the month's normal high, low, rain days and dusk time.

How this was made

Climate source. NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020, monthly (normals-monthly-1991-2020), NCEI Access Data Service — NCEI Access Data Service. Dataset version 1991-2020. NOAA data is public domain.

Per month, per city: normal high (MLY-TMAX-NORMAL), normal low (MLY-TMIN-NORMAL), normal precipitation (MLY-PRCP-NORMAL), and average days with precipitation ≥ 0.10 in (MLY-PRCP-AVGNDS-GE010HI).

Dusk. Civil dusk for the 15th of each month, computed with the suncalc library and shown in the city's local time zone.

The rule (v1.0). normal max >= 50F AND normal min >= 28F AND rain days (>= 0.10 in) <= 10. Marginal: fails exactly one condition. Off-season: fails two or more conditions.

Pulled 2026-11-03. Next scheduled refresh 2027-11-03. Raw data: playable-months.json.

Known limits. A station's normals are not a course's microclimate; normals are 30-year averages, not forecasts; wind is not factored in yet (v1).
